"Eylu Devarim" comes from "The First Album," Beged Kefet's debut album (1987). It is a setting of a traditional Jewish prayer that delineates human beings' responsibilities to God (which look remarkably like our responsibilities to each other). It adapts a passage from Talmud Shabbat 127a. Beged Kefet (1982-2009) was comprised of: Rabbi Les Bronstein, Rabbi Billy Dreskin, Cantor Ellen Dreskin, Cantor Riki Lippitz, Cantor Benjie Ellen Schiller, Beth Sher, and Cantor Leon Sher. As you will hear, we worked hard to produce tight harmonies. And this was before you could tune things up afterward. Audio verite, you might say!

Ey-lu de-va-rim she-eyn la-hem shee-oor,
She-a-dam o-khel pey-ro-tey-hem
Ba-o-lam ha-zeh
V’ey-lu hen:

Kee-bood av va-em,
U-g’mee-loot kha-sa-deem,
V’hash-ka-mat beyt ha-mi-drash
Sha-kha-reet v’ar-veet.

Take care of your family,
Neighbors and friends.
Learn how the world works,
And how its future depends on you.

V’hakh-na-sat or-kheem,
U’vee-koor kho-leem,
V’hakh-na-sat ka-lah,
U-l’va-yat ha-met,
V’ee-yoon t’fee-lah.

Take care of the stranger;
The needy, too.
Know when to celebrate,
And when to shed tears,
And when to pray.

V’ha-va-at sha-lom ben a-dam la-kha-vey-ro.
Tal-mood To-rah k’ne-ged koo-lam.

Studying Torah is equal to them all,
Because its teachings lead to them all.
